When it comes to the expansion of new media, the topic of privacy and confidentiality are an arising issue. With more and more technologies being innovated, more and more information is being shared through networks. When there's more and more information on the networks, it becomes easier for too much information to be shared. As social media profiles become more and more in depth, the potential for someone's sensitive information to be leaked. For example, there is potential for new technologies to constantly have someone's location on track. When someone is being constantly tracked, technological errors may occur or someone may be able to access that information in real time. Having someone's location being compromised can lead to exposure of danger or harassment. Also private information such as social security numbers or phone numbers or credit card information can be stolen. According to Tony Bradley in Survey reveals generation gap in attitudes about security and privacy , "Nearly half of Gen-Xers also fail to protect their smartphone with a PIN or passcode of some sort, while only 37 percent of Millenials are that cavalier." Lost or stolen phones without a passcode is one of the easiest way for information to be stolen. Nude photos, banking information apps, phone numbers in the contacts list are all just examples of important information that can be accessed through a phone. Another example is Jon Ossof, who was running for office, but was mocked as his  parody videos and his advocacy of underage drinking led to the general public to view him as a joke rather than a potential candidate.

  1. I agree with the idea that there is a correlation between the increase in technologies and the amount of information being shared. There are different ways that this kind of information can lead to problems in the future. For instance, stalkers nowadays do not just rely on obtaining information on people by following them around. Sometimes such information is obtained through social media.

  2. Technology keeps growing and the information passed through these technologies is becoming a huge privacy risk for everryone. There is so much data being shared and no solid infrastruture to protect us from hackers. Ironically, even if there are privacy controls, many people do not use them so it seems privacy will always be an issue.

  3. I think to fix this issue, we need to add more security features in the technology we create and be mindful that there are always people trying to obtain information from us.
