Blog Social networking
Social Networking technologies can be used in many corporate
and otherwise ways. For example, social media networking creates a platform for
users to share information. For example, in the "Social Media in Plain
English" video by Common Craft, we are presented with a metaphor example
of a community that is able to create their own ice cream flavors , share
feedback, and rate each others ice creams for free. Creating a feedback based
environment is a great catalyst in creating new ice cream flavors and pushing
for a community. Benefits of these technologies would be greater exposure to
the world , a more tight-knit community regardless of distance, and more ways
to learn about the world. In "Social Networking Technology Boosts Job
Recruiting" by Frank Langfitt, Langfitt states that "Professional
recruiters have started hunting for job candidates using social networking
technology -- like the kind found on the popular sites MySpace and
Facebook." Social networking technology benefits both employers and
potential employees by increasing personal exposure and making more information
available. However, there is always a dark side. In Facebook Exodus by Virginia
Heffernan , Heffernan starts off with, "one person shut down her account
because she disliked how nosy it made her. Another thought the scene had turned
desperate. A third feared stalkers. A fourth believed his privacy was
compromised. A fifth disappeared without a word.". Heffernan's article is a clear indication that social networking technologies is not all sunshine and people have their concerns about privacy and the effects social networks have on their everyday lives.
